Mobile Friendly

Unsurprisingly, having a site that can be viewed easily on mobile devices continues to be important, with more than half of the world’s web traffic now coming from mobile users.

Google is continuing to roll out it’s mobile first index, with many users noting changes in their page rankings already. You can use tools such as Google’s PageSpeed Insights to identify ways to make your site work better on mobile and desktop devices.

Something else to consider in 2018 is setting up your site to use Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP). This is a Google backed project that enables your pages to load quickly on mobile devices, and can be as simple to setup as installing a WordPress plugin.

If you don’t currently have a responsive website that adapts to mobile devices, you could be missing out on a large chunk of traffic.

 

Faster images and video

We posted a blog about image optimisation back in August of 2017, using the right file type and compressing your images can have a major impact on the speed of your website. Again, this is particularly important with regards to viewing your site on mobile devices.

You can also compress the size of any videos on your site using freely available compression tools, such as Handbrake. There is a great tutorial here that guides you through reducing the size of your video files in Handbrake.
