Editing the hosts file in Windows 8, 8.1 or 10 Print

  • 100

In the start menu, search for notepad, then right click the notepad application and select "run as administrator".

Next, use the file browser to navigate to the hosts file, which can be found at c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

Right click the hosts file and select open with notepad.

You can now edit the hosts file and save your settings.

The most common reason for needing to edit the windows host file is to test a website on our servers before changing the 'live DNS' to complete a migration.  To do this, you should add lines as shown below:

x.x.x.x mydomain.com
x.x.x.x www.mydomain.com

Replacing 'x.x.x.x' with the IP address of your service with ourselves, and mydomain.com with the domain for which you wish to override the 'live DNS'.

Remember to remove these lines once you have completed the testing and migrated!
